Gladys Maria Knight was born in Atlanta in 1944 and is a singer, songwriter, actress who’s nicknamed the Empress of Soul. She started her journey in show business by winning a TV talent contest (Ted Mack's The Original Amateur Hour) when she was just 7 years old. In 1953 she and her brother, sister, and cousins formed an R&B/soul group called the Pips. They got a record deal in 1966 and recorded several major hit singles; most notably, 1972’s Grammy Award winning track, Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye). Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded their final album (All Our Love) in 1987 and Gladys then embarked on her solo career that now consists of 11 studio albums and numerous hit singles. She’s been nominated for 7 Grammy Awards of which she won 4 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1987, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album in 2001, Best Gospel Performance in 2004, and Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album in 2005. She has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2011 she received a Soul Train Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
