The Temptations, Michigan’s sensational soul artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall!
The Temptations were formed in Detroit in 1960 by members of 3 rival groups: Otis Williams, the Distants, and the Primes. Over the years, their musical style has spanned many genres such as soul, early pop/rock, Motown (a type of soul music crafted with an ear towards pop appeal, typically featuring prominent and often melodic electric bass guitar lines, distinctive melodic and chord structures, tambourines to accent the back beat, and a call/response singing style that originated in gospel music), AM pop (the dominant sound of Top 40 AM radio during the 1960s and '70s), early R&B, psychedelic soul (a genre that emerged in the late 1960s by soul musicians embracing elements of psychedelic rock, including its production techniques and drug influence), smooth soul (a subgenre of soul featuring melodic hooks and production that capture the right seductive mood), and pop soul (a fusion of pop and soul – originating in the 1960s and exemplified by Motown Records artists such as The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, and The Miracles - as an attempt to give soul music crossover success). They've had a stellar career with 43 studio albums, 3 soundtrack albums, 4 live albums, 15 compilation albums, 109 singles, and 3 Grammy Awards.
